Simple Living, High Craft: The Arts & Crafts Furniture Masters in Our Cowboys & Indians Auction

ree

In an auction celebrating the rugged independence of the Old West and the profound artistry of Native American cultures, a quiet revolution in craftsmanship also takes center stage: the American Arts & Crafts Movement.

Rejecting the excessive ornamentation of the Victorian era and the soulless uniformity of mass production, the Arts & Crafts Movement championed honesty in materials, utility in design, and the dignity of manual labor. It resulted in furniture that is timeless, powerful, and built to last generations.

This November 22nd, our Cowboys & Indians Auction features a curated collection of exemplary Arts & Crafts pieces, including rare selections from the movement’s most important masters: Gustav Stickley, Charles P. Limbert, and more.

Spotlight on the Masters:

Gustav Stickley (The Pioneer)

Often considered the face of American Arts & Crafts, Gustav Stickley’s furniture is defined by its austere, rectilinear forms and robust, quartersawn oak construction. He founded the United Crafts and later the Craftsman Workshops, publishing The Craftsman magazine to promote his philosophy of "simple living."

In this auction, look for pieces like the stately Gustav Stickley Mission Quarter-sawn Oak Vanity (Lot 1262) and the comfortable Gustav Stickley Craftsman Workshops Rocker (Lot 1279). These pieces showcase his iconic exposed tenons and dark, rich finish—furniture built to be admired and truly lived with.

Charles P. Limbert (The Visionary)

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Charles P. Limbert introduced a slightly more fluid, European-influenced element to the Mission style, differentiating his Limbert’s Arts and Crafts line. While still honest and sturdy, Limbert pieces often incorporate subtle curves, cutouts, and specialized forms, creating a distinctive style.

Highlights in this collection include the beautiful Charles P. Limbert 3-Door Arts & Crafts Bookcase (Lot 1255), the functional Limbert Arts & Crafts Oak Table (Lot 1246), and his elegant Limbert Arts & Crafts Library Table (Lot 1304). These pieces offer a softer, yet equally compelling, take on the classic Mission style.

Stickley Bros. and L. & J.G. Stickley

The Stickley name branched out among brothers, all of whom contributed significantly to the movement. While Gustav is the most famous, we also feature excellent pieces from:

  • Stickley Bros. (Quaint Furniture): Known for functional, well-designed pieces marketed as "Quaint Furniture." (See Lot 1271: Stickley Bros Quaint Mission Chair).

  • L. & J.G. Stickley: The firm run by Leopold and John George Stickley, offering high-quality Mission and Arts & Crafts designs. (See Lot 1259: L.&J.G. Stickley Arts & Crafts Twin Bed).

A Timeless Style for Today

The enduring appeal of Arts & Crafts furniture lies in its ability to blend seamlessly into modern interiors. It provides a foundation of warmth, history, and uncompromising quality that transcends fleeting design trends.
